The arrival of Syrian and other refugees beginning in 2015 transformed Europe’s political landscape and tested the continent’s ideas about identity, belonging, and tolerance. Yet these communities were part of a much longer story of migration after World War II—from Indians in Britain and Algerians in France to Somalis in Sweden.
For National Geographic’s 2015 feature, The New Europeans: Voices of a Changing Continent I collaborated with photographer Robin Hammond to create more than 30 intimate video portraits of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants across Europe. The participants shared their memories, hopes, fears, and reflections on building new lives even as many on the continent feared their influence.
The films became an interactive digital experience for National Geographic and was honored by both the Society of Publication Designers and the American Society of Magazine Editors.
