<image:caption>Centuries-old Italian villages were becoming ghost towns. Refugees were fleeing conflict and seeking new homes. The needs of each have come together in Camini, a 12th-century town whose population has dwindled to about 280 people—a quarter of what it once was. In hope of breathing new life into deserted neighborhoods, Camini has welcomed more than 80 refugees and immigrants from Africa and the Middle East. Just a few miles away, refugees are landing on the coastline in droves. As of August 2016, more than 115,000 people had successfully made the harrowing journey across the Mediterranean to Italy. In 2014, a young Senegalese man named Assan Baldé crossed the most deadly route, from Libya, and was sent to Camini’s budding refugee program. There he found a second home and a second family with Cosmano Fonte.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Caesar Sant of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, began playing the violin at age two and as a toddler amazed his music teachers with his advanced abilities. But by the age of five, he had suffered three debilitating strokes due to sickle-cell anemia. His third stroke left him unable to walk or play the violin. Now, as he tries to regain his musical abilities, he has a newborn sister who can provide a bone marrow transplant that could be lifesaving and could ensure he'll always be able to play the violin.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Starting in 1915, 500,000 to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians living in Turkey were killed or expelled from their ancestral lands, where they'd lived mainly peaceably with the Turks for centuries. Armenians call the slaughter genocide; Turks say it was the consequence of the larger war, in which many groups, including Turks, suffered terribly. Five of the few remaining Armenian survivors reflect on the horrors they faced fleeing their homeland as children and on what life has been like for them in exile.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the age of 89, Phyllis B. Andrews died at home, surrounded by her loved ones. National Geographic photographer Lynn Johnson shares the intimate moments between the dying woman and her family in the final days of Andrews's life. As a friend of Andrews's daughter Nancy, Johnson was able to photograph and record the last week of Andrews's life and even her final breath. Her health rapidly declining, Andrews spoke about death and aging as her daughter came to terms with saying goodbye. Theirs is a story like so many others, where the child, now caring for a dying mother or father, takes the role of the parent. This is how one woman and her family moved through that time.  </image:caption>

<image:caption>At the Senkwekwe Center for mountain gorilla orphans in Congo, a handful of Virunga National Park rangers live around the clock with four juveniles whose parents were killed. The rangers see their families only every few weeks and are very close to their charges. Chief caretaker André Bauma along with his team have hand-raised the gorillas since they were first brought to the center. The first gorilla, Ndakasi, was found when she was just two months old, near the body of her murdered mother. Bauma cared for her like a human child—letting her sleep on his chest for warmth and bottle-feeding her to help build her strength. After that, three more orphaned gorillas joined "the family" at the center. Since no mountain gorilla orphan has ever been successfully returned to the wild, they will always depend on humans.</image:caption>

Today Emmie says, “When we were 12, I didn’t feel like a boy, but I didn’t know it was possible to be a girl.” At 17 Emmie came out as transgender, and recently she underwent gender-confirmation surgery. She plays down its significance: “I was no less of a woman before it, and I’m no more of one today.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>A girl of 14 has been blind half her life because of cataracts, a condition most often associated with advanced age. Nasra inherited cataracts, however, as did three of her four siblings and her mother before them. In the developed world, cataract surgery is a common outpatient procedure. But Nasra lives in the Sundarbans, a region of West Bengal, India, made up of islands and rivers where many villages are accessible only by boat. Blindness is prevalent in the Sundarbans, but until recently getting treatment was nearly impossible for its residents. The services available were ill-advised: One man, Mahammad, sought care for an eye injury from a doctor who was actually a quack. Eventually, due to years of improper eye care, he became blinded for life. In this rural setting, blindness can be especially isolating. Fearing for her safety, Nasra never leaves her home alone. Mahammad requires assistance with everyday tasks. Ophthalmologist Asim Sil organized a network of medical workers to examine people in the Sundarbans and transport them by bus or by boat to care centers and a hospital. His plan is to expand the network’s reach even further and help connect the blind not just to the outside world but also to their own communities.</image:caption>

Some would face a bleak life if not for the care and instruction that they’re receiving. Faculty and staff guide the children through a rich curriculum of classroom learning, skills training, music, and even cricket and other sports.</image:caption>
